Many thanks for the detail.

My parents were form Czernowitz, and I remember my mother talking about
Arthur Koestler and the conversion of the Khasars (I did not know the name
until I read your message). Unfortunately, I have no ease with foreign
languages. I was born in Canada, and even though my parents spoke German
between themselves, and I took German right through High School - 5 years in
Ontario then, as well as a night class at the University here, I'm no better
off. I cannot read the treasure trove of correspondence, and I cannot
research the local Judenrat registers. It's quite discouraging, to be
foreclosed out of some extremely fascinating areas of my "identity".

Anyhow, it does seem reasonable that the Silk Road and the nearness of the
Ottoman Empire (in fact being a part of it until 1741), would result in many
Sephardim ending up in Bukovina starting centuries ago.

I read the diary of Tudela in German, may be 15 years ago, he made the same
trip like Marco Polo....These Khasars were very good fighters and came until
Pokutia, it is Poland and probably also to Bukovina...They were like the
Wikings,blond with blue eyes, their state were in the years 700-1100, than
they disappeared...and may be, who can know the Jentes in the year 1000????a
goodlooking man, once it is not a "sin"...Isn't it????
