Dear Hardy,

While I'm not a scholar or any sort of knowledgeable, I read - on this
website or a link from it - that the Silk Road, however modest its origins,
did become the "route" to the Ottomans and the Orient. It does seem very
plausible that there were feeder trails to the main route, and it also seems
quite plausible that many of the travelers would have diverted to a port and
cross to points south and east by sea. I did not know that Czernowitz's
origins were a trading station on a river. I would suppose that the
development of large scale commercial agriculture and related manufacturing,
such as leather or soap, put Czernowitz goods onto the Road. It's all
guessing on my part, and I'd like to hear from any economic historians
amongst us.

Regards, Bob

The Silk road had its start on the East coast of the Mediterranean.
There were feeders from Europe by ships from Constantinopole ,
Venice and more . Routes leading to these ports were not the Silk Road.
Silk Road was not a Jewish enterprise.
At its beginning Czernowitz was a trading station on the banks of the
Prut.
A few shacks for tax levying and ferry terminal.
Jewish observant traders stayed over Shabbat .
    Then they brought their families.
The ,later ,they moved up to the Ham to what later became
     the Judenstadt.
