Subject: [Cz-L] Hotel Central - Rise and Fall of a Hotel in Czernowitz
Czernowitzers...
Everyone (of our group) knows the "Hotel Schwarzer Adler" in Czernowitz, but
not all of you will remember the "Hotel Central" on Hauptstraße, but in fact
this one was the very first famous Czernowitz hotel. Heinrich Goldmann, the
most profiled columnist of "Der Tag" and the uncle of our fellow member
Silviu Landman, reminds us of the "Destiny of a House" in "today's" edition
of "Der Tag", i. e. 29.04.1934/2012, p. 2, available at:
http://czernowitzdaily.blogspot.de/
In the year 1891, the Hotel Central, owned by Rebekka Ziffer and the couple
Heinrich and Josefine Wagner, and managed by Mr. Silber, was the very first
and only one using electricity in town. The "creme de la creme" of the
Czernowitz society was among the visitors of the hotel, politicians, cavalry
officers from the Sadagora Regiment, squirearchy, nobility from Viena, etc.
Have a look at my posting at our Ehpes.com Blog
http://ehpes.com/blog1/2012/04/28/hotel-central-in-czernowitz/
and just figure out the bygone times. Following the deceases of the owners,
the "Heinrich and Josefine Wagner Foundation" has been created, which funded
the Jewish Orphanage under the direction of Mr. Feuerwerk; board members
were - among others - Dr. Benno Straucher, Imperial Council Naftali
Tittinger, Prof. Dr. Neumann Wender, Dr. Jakob Ausländer, Lazar Roth, Hersch
Trichter and Wilhelm Tittinger. But after WW1 the golden age for the hotel -
and not only - ended and the process of decay started, persisting during the
following decades.
Enjoy the story and the before and after pictures!
