On most official buildings in Cz. you will find sculptures of naked
Gods ,semi - gods , muses, lions , fauns ,nymphs.
Most are from greek mythology and history.
What has Greek mythology to do with Czernowitz ?
Nothing you would rightly say , so why?
The answer is German poetry.
The great German poets discovered Old Greece as a source
of inspiration and wrote wonderful poems on this.
Schiller ,Ghoete ,Heine and many many more.
Everybody loved it.
We loved it.
Our heroes were Dionisos, Polykrates, Ibikus and Theodorakis.
In all german speaking lands the public was greece - crazy.
Czernowitz followed suite , so we have these statues .
So it became a Kulturmetropole.
And we still know by heart the immortal verse:
Ich sei, gewaehrt mir die Bitte,
In eurem Bunde der Dritte!"

in your pact to be the third one)
very bad translation...
