Icould be wrong,but my memory seems to think that breakfast was a small
meal,the main meal of the day was around midday...except on the chagim when
evening became the big deal. Cornel

It could certainly be from the German "imbiss," but it is still strange
that breakfast is called onbijt, whereas imbiss is a small meal. May be
that breakfast was considered a small affair, as for example in Italy or
France, not like in the UK and USA
