My mother, Pearl Spiegel Fichman, was a Czernowitzer and a great letter
writer. She remained so until near the end of her life, in 2006. That
was her 'default mode' of communicating from Czernowitz with people in
other European cities and towns, as well as with relatives in the USA.
She kept on writing letters after she moved to the USA in 1949. She did
not transition to emailing. My father was not much of a writer. He
would often append short messages to my mother's letters.
I remember some stories from my mother about travel in the immediate
post-World War II period that involved the use of horse-drawn carts in
addition to trains - some of that was due to post-war conditions, I
think. During her childhood (she was born in 1920) she said there were
cars in Czernowitz but very few of them. The square she grew up on,
Mehlplatz, had a lot of horse-drawn carts (drawn by big, scary, Belgian
horses) that would often be tied up outside her house but I think those
were mostly for hauling supplies to market there. When she was a child
she sometimes traveled with her mother and sister from Czernowitz to
the mountains (to Dorna Watra and Gura Humoralui) during the summer, to
escape the heat for a little bit. I'm not sure how they traveled there
but am guessing by train . . .
Sincerely,
Eytan

Subject: [Cz-L] transportation in Romania
Hi. I've seen a variety of topics in this list, so I thought I'd
ask. My father's family is from Romania. His mother's family was from
Novoselitsa, his father's family was from Botosani. His parents married
in Chernovitz. They lived in Bucharest as well for a time. One his
uncles and family lived in Reni. What I'm asking about, as a not-quite
youngster who barely remembers life before internet....is about
transportation and communication. I'd like to hear stories from the
assembled who were there: How did you communicate with loved ones in
other cities...? Only How did you get from town to town? I'm
presuming a lot of this was by train...what was involved in getting to
the train, what was the trip like.....etc....? Growing up in America, I
learned about the invention of the car, and telephone, etc. But most of
what I learned was from the United States point of view. I'm wondering
what it was like over in Romania. Thank you
all,Lisa LITMAN-COHNLitman-Reni, Novoselitsa, ChernovitzCohn -
