Dear Leonie,
Your email is the first I have heard of mass graves in this area of
Bukovina.
My WEININGER and RIBNER/RUBNER/RUEBNER families came from Koctyntsi
(Costestie) and nearby Cabesti, where my grandmother Golda (Gussie)
WEININGER was born in 1899. Our RIBNER/WEININGER family dairy farm was
in Koctyntsi. There were also many WEININGER farmers in nearby
Drachyntsi (Drachinets). According to my late cousin Harry WEININGER, a
survivor whose family farm was in Drachyntsi: soon after the Soviet
occupiers retreated before the Nazi invasion in 1941, the local
Ruthenian (Ukrainian) peasants attacked the Jewish communities in the
area, massacring dozens, so they could steal the livestock and seize the
farms.
Yad Vashem http://db.yadvashem.org/ lists about 25 WEININGERs from
Drachyntsi and Costyntsi (75 in the Czernowitz-Storozynetz area) plus
166 RIBNERS in Bukovina. The date generally given for the Drachyntsi
massacre is July, 1941. In one Costyntsi page of testimony, it is given
as July 10, 1941. I have not yet checked all these Pages of Testimony
in YV; some of these people were murdered elsewhere, but many were
martyred close to home.
I hope this answer helps you to understand what you saw. If you took
any photographs, I would be happy to see copies of them.
All the best,
Marc
