Dearest Bianca
Welcome to the list which brings back such wonderful memories. Even though our war time childhood was far from normal, just the mention of the word Czernowitz brings on such nostalgia.
We lived with my uncle at Stefaniegasse 5. We had such a back yard. (our doorway was from the main stairway, though with a kitchen exit to the gang) We also had a garden in back of that yard with huge chestnut tree. At the end of summer we would gather the fallen chestnuts, peel the outer green shell. I can still taste them.
Unfortunately, I also have some unpleasant memories of that yard. When the Nazis/Romanians invaded Czernowitz in 1941, they gathered all the men from our apartments in that yard and led the out we knew not where. Miraculously, our men came back when others did not but ended up in a mass graves.
I do a lot of speaking in schools of my experiences. I tell them that story. Now I printed up a picture of one of those yards to go with my story.
Thank you, Edgar
Frieda
