I agree, Harry, that the area comprised of hundreds of
concentration camps of all sizes and shapes under the title
Transnistria should retain that name, even though the camps
have long ago been obliterated.. It is memorial to the thousands
of Jews and other victims masacred there and should be a
constant reminder that it must never ever happen again.

That said, the Governate of Transnistria, which has been trying
to gain EU recognition of its independence, has nothing to do
with those camps. But it shouldn't expect to receive many tourists or
foreign traders ------unless it calls itself something else.

I doubt if this an matter of of paramount importance. I presume the
government of that area is the Ukraine to-day and I cannot imagine that they have
this name officially for the region.. Professor Marianne Hirsch described
her visit to the area in her book "Ghosts of Home". The Antonescu mob were
concerned with finding a place, away from Roumanian teritory to carry out
their criminal acts. You cannot remove it from the minds of those who
survived or had relatives there. There is a a volume of almost 1000 pages
entitled "L'horreur Oublie - La shoah Roumaine" Bukovine et Transnistrie" where
this terminology is used throughout.
Perhaps others will convince you. - Harry
