I have read Koestler biographies and it seems he actually believed
this.....leading to the book. Cornel

Koestler did not write the 13th Tribe as serious history. He wrote it in an
attempt to lessen anti-Semitism in Europe: if European Jews descend from the
Khzars, rather than from the Jewish "race," then you have no racial - or
therefore any - basis for anti-Semitism.

Koestler's idea did not pan out very well.
