Koestler did not write the 13th Tribe as serious history. He wrote it in an
attempt to lessen anti-Semitism in Europe: if European Jews descend from
the Khzars, rather than from the Jewish "race," then you have no racial -
or therefore any - basis for anti-Semitism.
Koestler's idea did not pan out very well.
