 Dear Marianne,
It is true and important for all of us, the post-war generation, that with
your writings you build a wonderful memorial to your parents.

I remember a beautiful picture depicting you together with Lotte in your
book "Family Frames".

Can you, please, make this photo available to us on Ehpes?

May Lotte's memory be blessed.
Zichrona leBracha.
Irene

Subject: [Cz-L] Thank you

Dear friends,

Many thanks for the warm condolence notes following Hedy's lovely note about
my mother. Some of you know Lotte personally and others know her from our
writings. She was a true representative of her nonagenarian generation of
Czernowitzers -- cultured, multi-lingual, well-read, intellectually curious,
elegant and resilient. And so much more. My parents both joined our list in
its very early days and my father, especially, was quite active. After my
mother stopped using the computer a few years ago, she still really enjoyed
some of the conversations I called up for her and she especially liked the
various Yiddish expressions, the songs, the recipes you all evoked. She was
always a bit bemused at the active interest in Czernowitz that the list
fostered -- on the one hand, she shared in the nostalgia, but on the other,
she never failed to tell us that as a young woman, she actually found
Czernowitz small and constraining and wanted to leave for other more
cosmopolitan parts of Europe. Sadly, she came of age just with the start of
the war and thus she had to wait until 1945 to leave Czernowitz and then
only for Romania. Returning in 1998 was an important moment for her, but she
was disappointed in the shabby and lackluster place she found in 1998 and
was eager to tell us how different it had been in earlier days. Lotte was a
great friend of Hedy's, of course, and she was also very close to Pearl
Fichmann and some others on the list.

thank you for helping keep her memory alive, Marianne
