Jerry is perfectly correct. The Russians plundered what they could,
with the result that there was a shortage of food and most of those
who could flee, left the city to stay with relatives in safer areas.
My grandfather was drafted, my mother's older brother was sent
to his grandparents in Borsa, in the Carpatians and my grandmother,
my mother and her two younger siblings fled to Budapest.
In 1915 my mother attended first grade in Hungary.
She and her younger siblings suffered from malnutrition during the war
and their bone structure was for ever affected.
