Based on past and present experience the Jews of that region (Galicia and
Bukowina) that time feared very much the Russians. So when the Russians
started to advance most of the Jews packed up and fled further into the
empire. Some as my family moved to Moravia (Moeren) some to Vienna and so
on. When the situation cleared up most of them returned but also many
didn't, mainly because the children had to finish school. This emigration
was known in Czernowitz as "die Flucht".
