Boker Tov,
Is there anyone in the group that lives in Berlin or Potsdam or Brandenburg or around?
We have just recently found (following an extensive search) in Ukrainian records that an uncle of mine, who was drafted in Czernowitz into the Red Army in 1944, and who fought (in the 380th rifle regiment of the 171st rifle division) in the last days (29-30 April-1 May) of the catastrophic battle to capture the Reichstag, and fell there in the Koenigsplatz on the 1st of May (the first red banner was hoisted there on the morning of that day), was buried in Wuthenow (then a small village on the Eastern shore of the Ruppin lake), Potsademr Bezirk. Wuthenow is now a quarter of Neuruppin (on the Western shore of the Ruppin lake).
According to information from the Potsdam Friedhofverwaltung a number of Soviet casualties in the Potsdamer Bezirk were exhumed in 1946 and reburied in a number of Honor cemeteries for Soviet fallen, one of them in Neuruppin. We are not getting responses from the Authorities there (we suppose that these cemeteries were kept under good care until 1989 but perhaps now there is no enthusiasm to continue maintaining them and responding to messages, in particular if they refer to a Soviet soldier of Jewish origin).
Perhaps some Czernowitzer who happens to live in Berlin or the Potsdamer Bezirk could be of some help in this search for his current grave, even if it is a group grave (there are a few such).
Thanks in advance
Mordecai

Subject: [Cz-L] mass graves
Dear all,
you may remember the reques by Leonie Barabas-Weil, the long term volunteer of Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste in Czernowitz, about mass graves in the villages near Czernowitz. In the today published issue of AFS's magazine she writes about her experiences and search for mass graves.
You can download the magazine as a PDF file: https://www.asf-ev.de/fileadmin/scripts/download.php?path=fileadmin/Redaktion/Dateien/Publikationen/Zeitschrift_zeichen/zeichen_2012/ASF_Zeichen_2_2012.pdf
Scroll down to pages 12 and 13.
Thank you Leonie for writing and reporting!
Christian
