[Plain text Andy... you need to post in Plain Text --that gets rid of
all the junk characters that make this post very hard to read.]

Since we are into transportation and it is a quiet Sabbath and I'm not supp=
osed to be working, I'll schmooze a bit.=A0 We each of us have our own limi=
ted memories from childhood in Cz.=A0Until I tripped over our Cz group, I s=
eldom thought about those days=A0because so much has taken place since then=
. Looking back I realize I come from a number of snooty folks who had very =
definite and traditional ideas about things and I could hear their reaction=
s to the stretch limo.=A0 "Das ist v=F6llig verr=FCckt."=A0=A0=A0=0A=A0=0AM=
y dad thought I was nuts simply for carrying a large wallet made for breast=
pockets.=A0 He'd never seen one before, therefore it was crazy.=0A=A0=0ACa=
rs didn't fascinate me in my childhood in Cz as they did in my teens in Can=
ada.=A0 Just up the street on Strada Traian (I never knew the old Austrian =
name, Splenigasse, until I joined the list and learned from one of you) the=
re were some big government buildings and they had a small yard on one side=
that had a wrought iron fence. Inside, often=A0there were two or three car=
s=A0parked and I believe one of them was a Rolls Royce (or Packard which ha=
d a similar grill)=A0 But to me the fiaker was 'for real' and I loved horse=
s.=0A=A0=0ABy the way, this link=A0=A0 https://www.google.ca/search?q=3Dfia=

97tD-af6QGqt6yhCw&sqi=3D2&ved=3D0CHMQsAQ&biw=3D1280&bih=3D915=A0 will take =
you to a whole collection of pictures of fiakers which may delight you.=A0 =
=0A=A0=0AWhat impressed me was the multi-tasking ability of the fiaker. In =
the winter they would exchange the wheels for sled runners and that's more =
than you can do with a Rolls Royce or Ferrari.=0A=A0=0AAll this reminds me =
of a bitter lesson learned in connection with carts and horses that I'm hap=
py to share with you.=A0 One summer my parents and Dr. and Mrs. Noe, sent m=
e and Hans Noe on vacation with our nannies - unsere Freulein - to Campulun=
g or thereabouts.=A0 =0A=A0=0AI remember two moments of that summer - we wo=
uld have been less than six years old because I lost my Freulein to my newl=
y born cousin who was six years younger than I.=0AWhat I remember is a wood=
en channel of sorts that functioned as an acqueduct taking the water to a m=
illwheel downstream.=A0 The water came down harder and faster once nearly t=
aking us with it. That was scary and memorable.=A0 =0A=A0=0AThe other thing=
involved potential violence with which we lived there all the time which m=
akes it so memorable.=A0Hans and I had joined some sort of organization whi=
ch aimed to protect animals from cruelty, etc.=A0 We had even been given ba=
dges of sorts and that made us feel big, important and authoritative.=A0 On=
e day, on a steep hill, we saw a Romanian peasant whipping an emaciated hor=
se which was trying to pull a wagon loaded with huge logs.=A0 The load was =
too big and heavy and the horse too weak; and the nasty peasant too=A0stupi=
d to realize this, so he kept whipping the horse.=0A=A0=0AHans and I got ou=
t our badges which we flashed like cops on contemporary TV shows and ran to=
ward him shouting to stop beating the horse.=A0 The peasant grabbed a big a=
xe off his wagon and came rushing toward us.=A0 We were sophisticated enoug=
h to know it was time to retreat and we ran for our lives.=A0 =0A=A0=0AIt w=
as one of my first lessons in the reality of life.=A0 The next=A0lesson cam=
e from an Italian gentleman who said, "Son, you can have anything in life t=
hat you want if you just walk in with a big smile...and a gun."=A0=0A=A0=0A=
