Brand names!
You young Czernowitzers amaze me. The only name that I recognize is "Nivea"
which, of course, is still very much around today.
Jingles? Never heard a jingle back in Cz. The first ones I heard were in the
new world.
I do recall one you missed, though. "Ola Gum." Two street urchins grabbed me
in a market and told me to go to the drug store and ask for the free candy
they were handing out - called Ola Gum.
Most drug stores had a sign on the outside advertising this "candy." Of
course it was a condom. I sensed that they were trying to pull my leg,
pretended to start walking toward the drug store but then hid in the crowd
and went home.
I asked mother and dad about it and they became very serious and embarrassed
and uptight. They said that the boys were just kidding me. They said it is
probably some kind of medicine.
I sensed that they were lying to me and later, a maid of ours who taught me
about the bees and birds explained this mystery, too.
P.S. Was the term "Scherzel" or "Schertzel" commonly used in referring to
the end crust of a loaf of bread. I recalled last night how she loved that
first or last slice on a rye bread which was mostly crust. It might have
been her own way of describing that piece of bread. She seemed to regard it
as a special treat of sorts. Does this ring a bell with any of you? Is there
a story behind it?
