Miha...
As you know, I'm currently touring through Romania, bound for Bukovina. Therefore just a brief remark to your questions concerning the total number of Jews, who perished during the Romanian Holocaust. Please check first the Final Report of the Wiesel Commision on the Romanian Holocaust, published by the USHMM in Washington:
http://www.ushmm.org/research/center/presentations/features/details/2005-03-10/
The commission worked under time pressure and some of its findings are questionable, but current researches are verifying generally the statings concerning the number of victims:
"Determining the number of victims - The number of Romanian Jews and of Jews in the territory under Romania's control who were murdered during the Holocaust has not been determined with final precision. However, the Commission concludes that between 280,000 and 380,000 Romanian and Ukrainian Jews were murdered or died during the Holocaust in Romania and the territories under its control. An additional 135,000 Romanian Jews living under Hungarian control in Northern Transylvania also perished in the Holocaust, as did some 5,000 Romanian Jews in other countries [among them, my uncle Maximilian Hauster, who was deported from Belgium to and murdered in Auschwitz]."
Based on precise studies, which have been conducted in the meantime, I think it's reasonable to state, that about 1/3 of the Jewish population of about 900,000 people in pre-war Romania and the territories under its control perished during the Romanian Holocaust.
Coming closer to Bukovina, best wishes to all of you!
