In response to the Email of June 23by Karolina Koziura about the youth
exchange program planned by SVIT Ukraine for this summer:
SVIT Ukraine has held since 2008, every summer a work-camps to clear
the Jewish cemetery of weedy trees, bushes, vines and weeds.
The volunteers who participate in these work-camps come from all over
the world; France, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Australia, Japan, USA and more.
They make sure that their presence in Chernivtsi is noted by the local
inhabitants. Very often, local young people join them in their work at the
cemetery.
Most of the volunteers are not familiar with the history of the city.
It should be counted to the credit of SVIT Ukraine, that besides organizing
and bringing volunteers to work at the cemetery, they also want to bring
these young people into contact with us, former inhabitants of the city, to
tell them what the relations between the various ethnic and religious groups
within the city were like.
I therefore urge all those who have some personal knowledge of this subject
to answer Karolina Koziura.
To start the process, I will write of what I know and send it both to
Karolina and to this List, so that any of you may either confirm, object or
add to what I write.
