Thanks, Edgar,

The Bucharest Institute for Legal Medicine "Mina Minovici" was the first
legal and forensic medicine institution in Europe, and may be, the first in
the world.

In my childhood, in the 1950's my father showed me with pride and nostalgia
this and other buildings in this mostly Jewish neighborhood, where he spent
some years while studying Medicine in Bucharest (1923-1930).

I, for my part, was passing by this building every day, for 17 years on my
way to school and then to the University (1953 - 1970).

On the Rumanian link on Edgar's blog, scroll down to the last picture taken
by some courageous citizen in 1985. You can see the destruction work done on
the site by the "Ceausescu -bulldozers".

Many young people in Bucharest deplore the disappearance of the heart of the
historical center of Bucharest of which the Jewish Quarters were an integral
part.

Irene

Czernowitzers...

Sixteenth stage of my motorcycle journey, backwards, but again bound for
Bukovina: Intermezzo in Bacau and the Jewish-Romany experience!

http://hauster.blogspot.ro/2012/07/intermezzo-in-bacau-5055-km.html

In addition and thanks to Irene Fishler I've updated the posting
"Bibliophily and Oases of Calm in Bucharest"

http://hauster.blogspot.ro/2012/07/bibliophily-and-oases-of-calm-in.html

by adding an outstanding b/w photo of the Morgue of Bucharest. The new
National Library of Romania was raised on the premises of this very first
Institute of Legal Medicine buit in Bucharest. I do realize, dear Irene,
that this unique building evokes childhood and teenager memories to you.

Enjoy the postings!
