Cornel is absolutely correct. Although many of us on the Czernowitz
membership list were not born in or ever visited tthat old Austrian city,
we inherited our love for it from parents and grandparents who were
natives.
Some, like my grandparents Gussie and Marcus Steinhauser, emmigrated
from Czernowitz in the early 20th century. (They sailed to New York
with their four children and never moved again).
The oldest of those children, Charles (Karl) Steinhauser, my father, used
to tell us stories about his native city and outstanding university in its
center.
He especially marveled that his studies at the CZ gymnasium were much more
advanced than those at the New York schools - so much so that he passed the
qualifying exams for medical school at age 18. In fact, Dad was so
fluent in
German, French and Latin that he earned some of his tuition by tutoring
other students in those subjects. He graduated from there at age 21 (just
in
time to be commissioned a U.S. Naval medical officer in World War I.)
I know for a fact that my father's passion for music was developed in
Czernowitz - especially symphonic, operatic and liturgical melodies - and
Dad's beautiful tenor voice could frequently be heard singing Hebrew
in the New York City temple or harmoniziing with my brother Sheldon
at home..
Of course I am extremely indebted to Hardy Brier, Harry Jarvis,
Edgar Hauster and many other Cz. list members for their wonderful
photos and very vivid descriptions of the city that "can never be
forgot".
Possibly, I will see it for myself next year, but if not I won't love
Camelot, er.. I mean Czernowitz, any less.
Most of all, I am very happy I joined the Cz. List and the many
friends I've met along the way. Kindest regards to all,

P.S. Just what is a "Czernoschwitzer?"

Filled with these conceptions we fled Cz in 46.
On a high pedestal of self conceit.
They called us Czernoschwitzers.
What do they know !
