Dear Listers

The stories about powidla made me laugh.

Last year in Tbilisi my cleaning lady bought me a jar of some dark thick =
stiff which she also called powidla. I found it strange as I understood =
immediately what it would be, without knowing why, or even thinking I =
knew the name. I am sure my father (born in Czernowitz in 1905) must =
have managed to buy it somewhere in England, or perhaps it was just his =
name for the (more liquid) English plum jam that my mother let us help =
make. Certainly I remember the bubbling volcano of jam making. =20

In the days in England when I regularly made jam, I remember also making =
"apple butter" which also had the same consistency and a dark colour.=20
