The List and Hardy are my post grad education.  I've never before heard the word Powidl. I guess since dad was Hungarian and insisted on Hungarian cuisine, there is much of the real Czernowitz that I missed out on.  I do recall a dark spread and, of course, Kompote of all kinds but Powidl is new to me.  I wonder if the Ukrainians in Chernivtsi still make it? I visited Bucharest in 1994 and stayed with a friend in the center of town where they had a small disaster right after I arrived.  Someone in the neighborhood used a ton of plums to make Tuica (Tzuica) and flushed the residue and skins down the toilet which clogged up the whole street's sewage system. The last time I bought a bottle of Tuica (for medicinal purposes) was in Tel Aviv in 2007 and it was imported from Romania.  Bon apetit. Prosit!
Andy
