I had the opportunity to witness the making of Powidlain the backyard
of our house on Russkaya str. No.9 some time around 1965.
(Almost) all neighbors came together in the back yard, dig a hole in the ground,
1 or 1 1/2 meter long, about half a meter wide and 20-30 cm deep in the middle.
In the middle of the hole they put coals. Iron sticks were put on the top of the hole
to support a huge metal bowl on top of them, which was filled with plums.
The long extensions of the hole were catching wind or were used to fan the coals.
Also new coals were added from these two long extensions, as the procedure
took at least 2 or 3 hours before a huge amount of consistent Powidla was ready.
The neighbors moved the "Lopata" in turns, as nobody could do it for hours.
