In the heat of the discussion on Henry Barbusse and on naming our Shilgass
by his name I was reprimanded for not giving this famous French writer
the credit he deserves. I am humbly and deeply ashamed of my ignorance.
But facts :
1. Neither Moscow or Kiew have Barbusse streets .
2. Why didnt they rename more central streets like Chmelnitzky street ?
Pinkt our Shilgass ?
3. No other French writer : Hugo, Dumas ,Rousseau , Moliere, Balzac
have streets in Czernowitz.
I if at all, I would rename the Shilgass as Rabbi Mark Street.
Shot in the streets of Czernowitz after being shown how his Temple
was burning.
There is no memorial sign for him .
Four slabs lie in Bila street , where he was were shot ,among the 400
Jews in the first days of July 1941
Almost illegible by now.
The remains were transferred to the mass grave on Zelena cemetery
In 1944 or 45.
This is for Henry Barbusse and French literature I deeply respect
in my ignorance.
Hardy
