A small correction,
actually they cut two corners so it look like "XX".
Just yesterday 16.9 I visited the place and here the story.
There is a small plack in the interin level explaining this issue .
Today just 2 "XX" remain to memorize this issue.

The story behind "the cut star of David" is this:
When the building was built the handrail along the stairs was set
with metal stars of David.
Came the Soviets, confiscated the building and cut off one corner of
each star of David,
making them into regular five pointed stars.
Now some or all the stars have been restored to their old Jewish
significance.
