Hi Andy,
I met Marcel some years ago, here in Haifa (after having been
classmates in 1940/1 in a Russian school, a fact he did not exactly
remember ) and know about his endeavors about Tit Simedrea after he
succeeded to convince Jad Vashem about Russu. It seems the main
opposition to Simedrea was his antisemitic and well known anti
comunist convictions. Indeed, if he had some role in appealing to the
Queen for Cz. Jews, as it was contended by some clerical circles, and
certainly by those who passed more then 1 and a half year in the
cellar of the Residenz - that fact was not made known by the Gheorghiu
Dej or Ceausescu regime for obvious political reasons. There is a real
problem of judging his merits and faults.
Berti.
