I did visit Czernowitz during the Soviet period. It was drab, with some foods
being unobtainable and a strange atmosphere..report to Intourist etc. But,I
met quite a few Jews still there at the time, and I communicated in
Czernowitzer Deutsch with many since it was the only language we shared! The
Czernowitz of today is much much more alive and welcoming, the food is
excellent, the people are friendly and there are still Jews. Many may be
Galizianers who moved into town....but if you look back in history that was
always happening, and now there are 2 functioning synagogues. I strongly
suspect that there are many more Jews living there than the official
figures. And Hardy..the looks, facilities and colour of the houses are
important, parts of the place have been restored and look very much like in
the old times. Well worth visiting!!! Cornel

Czernowitz was the place many of us were born.
 This is all that matters.
Its looks , urban facillities and color of the houses
   are irrelevant.
