I can only add second hand stories as to the best period in Czernowitz history.
My dad, Morris Seidenstein was born in czernowitz in 1896. He used to tell us how he wished that everything could return to the Hapsburg era. He studied at gymnasium, studied latin and greek, spoke hochdeutsch, and yiddish at home. He was enrolled as a medical student in the Universty of Vienna prior to WWI. Although I have no specific information I have to believe that his family was well off. He would telll us that if he stayed in Czernowitz , he would have been presented with a horse and carriage as a wedding gift. He was drafted into the Austrian army medical corp and served through WWI. For some reasons, never specified, he was unable to contine his medical studies after the war and emigrated to the U.S in 1924. His medical school credits were not accepted in the US, so he attended pharmacy school and became a druggist. I have no doubt that he viewed the years in Czernwitz as the high point of his life.
Sid Seidenstein.
