I am the last person to say that life under the Soviets was good but in the
70s I was wearing French shoes and very fancy clothes. Just don't ask how my
parents were able to afford all that. By then, the gardening on the
Teatralnaya was okay too.
According to my grandmother, Franz Joseph was very good to the Jews,: the
old Chernowitzers adored him.
Romanians were not bad either. The Soviets, on the other hand, were quietly
called "yene melicha" and I was told again and again that life before WWII
was much better and that I was lucky not to know any better.
By the way, where the Chernowitzers' meeting in Tel Aviv is taking place? I
am in Australia, so I probably won't be attending, but I may send my brother
as a family representative.
