Re Safa-Ivrijah
I was a student at that school in the years 1931-35. It was a small private
school located in a inner courtyard behind the Toynbehalle. I don't
remember the name of the street, I think it was Faerbergasse , a small
street between Schulgasse and Landhausgasse. There were only 4 classes for
the first 4 years of schooling. Hebrew was taught, I think, exclusively in
the first 2 years and then, from the third class Romanian was taught. At my
time, I remember the teachers: Ms. Hasenfratz, Mr. Blank, and the
director's name was Ehrenkranz. We went to school on Sundays, but not on
Saturdays, although religion was not taught at all, and neither was
Yiddish. There were boys and girls in the same class and the boys went
without a kippa or hat, hence a non religious school.
I left Czernowitz April 1940, and do not know whether Ort or the Yiddisch
school was there after the war, but I doubt it, because it was a very small
school, barely 4 rooms, and a room for the teachers. The Yiddishe Schule,
where Yiddish was taught was in the Heinegasse, just behind the Juedisches
Haus, near the Fischplatz and the Theater.
At the ehpes there are 2 pictures of school classes I had sent. Perhaps
somebody will recognize him/herself.
I take this occasion to express some thoughts. I now live most of the time
in Tel Aviv, but I was lately away and did not phone to reserve a place at
the Bukovina meeting that will take place on 30 October at the Museum of
Tel aviv. I phoned now , and was told that there is no more room available.
I still intend to go there, to meet eventually some members of our blog,
but I do not know anybody. I have a white beard, not too big and wear
glasses. I would be glad if some of the blog members would approach me. I
always thought that Czernowitzer living in proximity should meet
occasionally, one or twice a year.
Hope to have answered the question about the Safa Ivrija.
