Dear Ruth,
I was very interested that you said you attended the public elementary
school named "Scoala Primara Oltea Doamna" for girls only, from 1937-1940,
because my mother Erica's secondary school was the "Liceul Oltea Doamna". I
had never heard before that there was a primary "Oltea Doamna" school. That
is very interesting.
But I think you may be incorrect when you say that the school building on
the corner of Neuweltgasse and Siebenbuergerstrasse was previously the
"Liceul Oltea Doamna" for girls.
My mother attended the "Oltea Doamna" from probably 1933 to 1937. Until
1936 (I think) the school was sited in the Landhausgasse, in the imposing
building which you can see on the left in this postcard (which was recently
shown here by Hardy):

In 1936 (I think) the school moved, and my mother spent a short time in the
new building. This was however not on the corner of the Neuweltgasse. My
mother was quite certain that it was further along the Siebenbuergerstrasse;
it was opposite the near part of the Volksgarten. I spent some time trying
to identify this building when I was in Czernowitz at the time of the
Reunion, and I am fairly sure that from 1936 the "Liceul Oltea Doamna" must
have been located in the building of the very impressive former
Landwirtschaftliche Mittelschule (agricultural school), which is now a
clinic. You can see it here, the middle picture in the left-hand column:

and also here, in the right-hand column, second from the bottom:

Best regards,
David

Hi David,
If you were walking along the Siebenbuergerstrasse away from the Ringplatz,
towards the Volksgarten, you would cross the Neuweltgasse, and the school
would be on the other corner. The main entrance was on the
Siebenburgerstrasse,
but there was a back entrance from the Neuweltgasse.
During the years 1944 - 1946 it became the Yiddish School No: 18, where
Hardy, I
an many others were students.
I visited the school in 1988 and took a photo, which I will try to send
you.
Regards,
Ruth
