Mimi: You got the English translation right but just in case you want to
sing it, here are the lyrics of the first stanza--- I don't remember the
rest:

There was a barrack next to the house in which
we lived during the war and across the street there was
a big gate to the courtyard of our factory.
In my imagination, I combined the two.

But at some point I was forbidden to sing this song,
Because I was told that it was one of the favorite songs of Hitler.

I never knew the words to the Romanian song, but then
I did not learn Romanian until I left Czernowitz.
Still my mother liked the melody and sang it often.
The Russian melody was still sung after the war.
Learning to sing Russian patriotic songs was a major part
of our curriculum in first and second grade.
