Hi! I think the Kaserne label is above the Kaserne building and there is
another building next to it. I have no knowledge of the Kaserne being
enlarged. Cornel

Mimi,
I have had a look at the 1941 Stadtplan, and I can see the
Madchenberufsschule marked as number 48. In case anyone does not know which
map we are referring to, you can see it here:
http://czernowitz.ehpes.com/czernowitz5/miscellaneous/stadtplan7-1.jpg
However, number 48 on the map is not the "Liceul Oltea Doamna" which Ruth,
Bianca and I have been referring to, and which my mother Erica attended.
This was a little nearer the centre of town, but still opposite the
Volksgarten. It is not specifically numbered on the map, but it is the long
building to the right of the word "Strada" and just beneath the word
"Kaserne", in square eG.
I am not sure what this "Kaserne" is referring to. There is the large
"Albrecht Kaserne", opposite the corner of the Volksgarten, which is shown
on the Stadtplan but not given any label. I might speculate that during the
war this barracks was expanded to include the school building, and that is
why the "Kaserne" label appears as it does. Does anyone else have any
thoughts about this? Cornel, you are usually good on military matters.
The "Liceul Oltea Doamna" school building is clearly shown as a school on
the Austrian map of 1907, where it is clearly marked "Landwirtschaft-
Schule". You can see it in square k18 of the map, here:
http://czernowitz.ehpes.com/czernowitz3/newmaps/Czernowitz-aa.jpg
The "Liceul Oltea Doamna" was a school for girls only, and it did have
Christian as well as Jewish girls.
I hope that helps!
Best regards,
David
