Hi Richard,

Having been in Radautz a couple months ago and having been confronted with
the same mission of identifying family homes from way before the war when
street names were completely missing or were in German I can say that the
identification mission is not simple at all. First with Dorin Frenkel's help
and later with with Edgar's help I got an idea of the aproximate location on
the current map but couldn't put my hand on a conversion table that includes
the old and newer street names. The local leader of the Jewish community in
Radautz was very unhelpful, to say the least. However, when I almost gave up
I found a young lady who works at the management of the Gerald's Hotel who
was knowledgable and immediately directed me to the "right" addresses.
Getting to the house numbers of interest we found very old homes that
potentially could be the homes we were actually interested in. The greatest
thing was that with Edgar's maps we actually located the home of one of my
great-grand parents from 1840's and got to the house which was realy built
around 1820 and looked similar to the pictures we had (yet very shabby now).

This was quite an experience which I will summarize as very positive. I wish
the local community leader was more interested beyond getting the donation
for the synagogue.

By the way with regards to the Gerald's Hotel I have to say that it was
somewhat disappointing. It is way more expensive than other oprions and I
found the rooms to be quite basic and breakfast very non inspiring... Other
hotels we visited in Romania (Suceava - wonderful Sonnenhof, Brasov - good
Coroana Brasovului) were much better and much cheaper.

Richard...

Welcome to the group, that's the right place for you to be! Please be very
careful concerning Romanian genealogy researchers, especially in the Suceava
area. Apart from the fact, that the remuneration for the job should be a
reasonable one, please make sure, that you NEVER EVER effect any payment in
advance!

Concerning the house numbers in Radautz, the only opportunity, which I know,
represents the "Land Register of Francis I"

http://www.franziszeischerkataster.at/Eindex1.html

established at the middle of the 19th century, but unfortunately the
detailed maps, displaying each and any house, parcel, etc., are not public.
However, let me know the house numbers you are looking for and I'll see what
I can dor for you.

Warmest wishes for now and have an amazing weekend!
