The propeller issue in the WW1 airplane is an interesting issue.

Best place from efficiency and center of gravity is at the front, a classical "puller" propeller.

However, once used these plane as a war planes, a machine gun was placed on it.
At first- the bullets hit the propeller blades and smashed it.

The solution for this problem may fit the cultural character of each nation:
-The British solve it by placing the propeller at the back, as "pusher". This is shown in the Radautz photo.
-The German built a synchronization mechanism between the propeller and the gun, so it shoots only when the propeller -blades are horizontal.
-The Russians built steel bullets proof blade.
