I am familiar with this phenomena, some people transferred
their Czernowitz snobbery to the US. My Czernowitzer uncle
who had moved to the US in 1933, even though he had grown up
speaking Yiddish and German, would speak only English to my mother,
knowing fine well that she did not know the language.
In his opinion, being from Europe was just not up to snuff.
