[Plain text please... thanks]

My great-grandfather, Karl Singer, left in 1897 and settled in Brooklyn. B=
y 1910, the family had a live-in servant, attesting to their fortunate fina=
ncial situation. My father reported that when somebody spoke in Yiddish, m=
y great-grandfather would turn and ask: "Did somebody understand what he s=
aid?" Total snobbery and self-inflated view. In fact, so ridiculous in Am=
erica, but so important in Europe.

Hi Mimi,

It's funny that you mention the snobbish residents of the central part of=
=20
the town.

The same situation continued during the Soviet times. We felt a strong sens=
e=20
of superiority towards the Jews of the "Volgogradskaya" (the lower part) wh=
o=20
spoke Yiddish at home, were less educated, attended the less prestigious=20
schools, and their Russian was heavily accented.
