Hi Edgar and dear list member,
As the oldest member of the list, I believe, let me put the point on the i..

about the latest discussion
In every country, in every town, in the smallest village, the society is
divided in circles.
1.The upper class, with high intellectuals, rich families, businessman
2.The middle class, physicians, lawyers,shop-owners, musicians
3.The poor workers,craftsman, the shoemaker.tailor, a.o.
4,The very, very poor, the ambulant "Handeles"the buyers , going through the
streets, asking for old clothes, the baggers
Czernowitz was not an exception...but it was not easy to climb in an upper
circle...nevertheless many poor Jewish families send the
oldest son to an university, and the other boys to gymnasium, the girls
learn home, or some classes, or a professional training at "Morgenroit" and
were married.
Have a nice Chanukka
Hedwig

Dear all...

I'd like to add my two cents to this still very interesting thread by
sharing with you an excerpt from my father's memories, edited by him on
20.08.1986, one day before his 74th birthday (sorry for the perhaps a bit
bumpy translation from German to English):
