Czernowitzers loved Schubert songs unreservedly. Also Schiller and
Heine poems.
These were the "Best". But they also read to their children "Der
Struwelpeter",
"Max und Moritz" and the grim fairy-tales of the Brothers Grimm.
Not the most edifying literature. We also sang:

Mai Kaeffer flieg,
der Vater ist im Krieg,
die Mutter ist in Pemmernland,
Pommernland ist abgebrandt,
Maikaeffer flieg.

May-bug fly!
father is at war,
Mother is in Pommerania,
Pommerania is burnt down,
May-bug fly!

And when we thought no adult could hear us, we recited:

Eins zwei drei, Panner Pickerei,
Panner Picker Oberstinker, eins zwei drei.
(I am not going to translate this, it is both vulgar and stupid)
