To all who doubt that the Romanian government was trying to get rid
of non-Romanian residents of Czernowitz:
Of course they did not phrase it this way, but people had to prove that
they were born either in Cernauti itself, or in an area which belonged
to "Romania Mare" (greater Romania)
I have in my possession two documents, one issued to my maternal
grandfather and his dependents in 1924, allowing them to remain in
Cernauti,
and another permit issued to my mother in 1923 to the same effect.
I am ready to send copies of these documents to anyone who wants them.
Here a translation of what it says in one document:
City of Cernauti Bucovina
Certificate of Residence
The city hall of Cernauti certifies that
Rachel Steinmetz born on June 16, 1908, unmarried
possesses the right of residing in this city
Dec. 22, 1923
