Dear all,
since two days I have been staying in Czernowitz at Hotel Andinna. A nice place - but a bit too far outside. You need a taxi to get into town and back. But as we have learned how to deal with taxi drivers - it is ok.
First of all I want to thank you all who have contributed to my knowledge about that fascinating town! Hints and lots of pieces of information have helped me - silent member mostly - ever so much.
To be honest: I get along well with the citymap of 1907! All places can be found easily and history turned back. Even our guide Natascha is surprised - a good friend of Zoya who is still mourning and has hurt her back so she cannot walk. But Natascha speaks German well - suits us even a bit better. And she is a phantastic guide! Each tour we start at the former Ringplatz: Have walked around Elisabethplatz, theatre, National Jewish House of 1908, State Gymnasium Nr.1 where not only Emil Franzos went to school to. In Poststraße we had a nice lunch at 'Knaus' - recommended by Gabriele Weissmann. But Slavia does not work there any longer... Franzensgasse, Rapfgasse, Bilaerstraße, Ziegeleigasse - places I am interested in because they played an important role in Selma Meerbaum's life. Each day ends up somewhere in Herrenstraße.
Yesterday the Jewish cemetery: each stones tells its touching story. Thank you especially to Mimi and Bruce who shared their knowledge and photos with me. So I was quite confident to find the hidden places with the help of Bruce's information about areas and plots - but I would have been lost without Yuri. Trees and bushes and "Goldruten" taller than man is wanted to hinder our trespassing. I met Yuri by chance. He seemed to work there, but he is an historican and knows the cemetery like "seine Westentasche": He looked at the plan, followed the lines and started running: through bushes, around trees and disappeared in the green "Dickicht" until we heard his friendly call: Here he is: Max Meerbaum, Selma's father. Under and between huge trees, hidden behind "Goldruten" and "Essigbäumen". The volunteers did a good job - but did not work in that area. And Yuri found all the  other places as well. Photos will be sent soon. If you ever need somebody to be your guide on the cemetery: I can recommend Yuri  Prestupenko. Director of the Chernivtsi Centre of Culture Heritage: yuri_cultur_centr_at_ukr.net
Russkaia Street 20.
He has written books about Czernowitz' cemeteries.
Today I follow Selma's traces: all places she had lived in.
Kind regards,
Marion
