Serah, I hope you drank a glass or two of"Lake's Folly" wine.....and if it
was another brand go out and buy some of the wine I miss because it is too
good for export!! But I still would like a full translation. We have a
professional film-maker in the group and I suspect he could confirm that
films can be made to show things to audiences that are convincing but not
necessarily true to all the facts. Just one example...during the Vietnam war
Sydney TV had us convinced that huge anti demos were practically wrecking
London. When I got to the UK I discovered that it was a few 100s of people
outside the US Embassy..the rest of London did not even know it was
happening! I left in your first wave. But,I came back, both during Soviet
times and after. You grew up during the Soviets....how much of "the broken
spirit" you describe were you aware of then? The Jews I met on my visits
were partly"original" Czernowitzers and partly incomers from the villages
etc....but come to think of it,is that not the way Czernowitz acquired it's
Jews all along?? I am very aware of the terrible things that happened,to
many of my family too.and yet....my Czernowitz friends tell me the Jewish
population is growing...slowly,but never-the-less growing.I am part of the
cemetery restoration group as are many others including volunteers from
Ukraine,Germany and other countries, and none of our graves are being
desecrated to use the stones for street repair. To my mind, "Am Israel Chai"
is still a valid concept in my home town!! Cornel

Dear Edgar, thank you for posting the documentary.
Hardy, the Jews left Czernowitz in 3 waves: the first wave left after the
WWII, the second wave in 1970s and the third, the last wave of the exodus,
in the 1990s, and, as I could see from the movie, their spirit already
broken from having seen the joys of Perestroika and thousands of their
friends and relatives leave.
I don't think they will ever come back.
