Cornel,

I wish you were right but Jews leave their host countries for 2 reasons: a)
political situation becomes dangerously unstable; b) the country's economy
is heading into a long stagnation and decline. The last wave left due to
exactly these 2 reasons.Today the political situation looks stable but the
economy in Western Ukraine is very weak so I wouldn't expect the Jews back

I learned that Krasoarmeiskaya street was partly paved with the Jewish grave
stones after the war from the documentary. The people in the 1990s
documentary complained bitterly that authorities did nothing to stop the
desecration of the graves. I know that situation is different now and that
the cemetery is being restored. It's a big relief for our guilty conscience
though many people from o/s pay privately for the upkeep of "their" graves.

I've learned a lot about the "broken spirit' of the older generation growing
up in a family where my father's side returned from Siberia and my
mother's-from Transnistria. But my parents (the younger generation) managed
to bounce back and even prospered during the Soviet times and, then, in
Israel.

In my teens I had a weird habit to take long walks in the Cz Jewish
cemetery; it was very peaceful, beautiful and green. It was also reasonably
well kept. However, even then, some of the recent graves were robbed and the
old Cz graves looked neglected.

It's good that you mentioned that after the war Cz population consisted
partly of "original" Czernowitzers and partly of newcomers. I disagree with
Hardy that most of the newcomers were from Ukraine. I think that a large
percentage of newcomers were survivors from Bessarabian "shtetles". But,
again, we don't have the statistics.

Serah
