Dear Czernowitz List Members

My paternal grandfather Marcus ROSENBERG was born in Czernowitz in
1883. I have a copy of his birth record and those of 7 his siblings.

>From research I have undertaken using records filmed by the Mormons, I
have traced the family backwards two further generations.
All 4 of My Grandfather's grandparents lived in Czernowitz and 3 of
the 4 were born with the lastname ROSENBERG.

I am experienced in German research, where I know about surname
adoption lists, but I have never read anything about surname adoption
in Czernowitz.

When were surnames adopted by the resident Jewish community? Are
there published lists eg in official journals and similar, such as
there are in Germany?
Where can I access such records?

Are there other records I might find to push my research back further
to see if all my ROSENBERG's are connected (I hope not too closely!)

I am researching the following connected families from Czernowitz:
ROSENBERG, TRESSER, UNGAR / UNGER, PAUKER, RUBIN, KATZ and
MEERFELD / MEHRFELD / MERFELD / MEIERFELD - all the same family

Many of the family lines I am researching end at WW2, with most of
these family members being sent to Transnistria, and not returning.
Some members of the family now live in Israel. Please contact me if
you recognised the names and may have information to help my research.
 Thank you.

Kind regards from London UK
