"Poaley Tsion" (Workers of Zion) as a Socialist Zionist movement differed
from the other Zionist movements by taking the Yiddish language as its
official language, in order to specify the partnership between all Jewish
workers - those that make up the Jewish home in Eretz-Israel (Palestine at
that time), and those who continue to live in Diaspora. As already noted
Czernowitz was an important center of Yiddish culture at that time. Which
explains the extensive activity of the Po'aley Tsion movement there in
education (From kindergarten to vocational school), and the Yiddish
newspaper of which Mimi's grandfather Leib Steinmetz was the editor.
An interesting fact: David Ben-Gourion (David Green) was one of the first
members of Poaley Zion but after he came to Palestine he adopted the Hebrew
language as his language and became one of its most ardent preachers.

Mimi,
last month I posted this photo of the kindergarten (it comes from the
YIVO archive) together with two photos of the Poalei Zion sport club
(http://czernowitz.ehpes.com/czernowitz12/testfile2013-1/1456.html).
Ghetto Fighters House Archive has several dozens photos from different
Poalei Zion activities in Czernowitz. Here is a couple of examples:
