Jerry is right about the Poalei Tsion and the Yiddish language.
My grandfather Shaul Leib Steinmetz was a Yiddishist till the first time
he visited Palestine in 1923. When he realized how many Sephardi
and Arabic Jews there were, he changed his mind and realized
that Hebrew should be the national language.
The Yiddish weekly newspaper my grandfather edited and published
was called "Die Yiddishe Arbeiter Zeitung" and copies of it can be found
in the Zionist archives in Jerusalem and in the central library in
Tel Aviv.
