yes you are right. The world did not vanish. The Jewish world in this region did vanish. Even worse: It did not vanish, but was destroyed.
 
And yes, there was and is a lot to contemplate. From pothole to pothole. I will write about this after finishing my daily reports. Both of you (Hardy and Cornel) are right - beeing impressed and beeing depressed are close to each other when traveling there. Just a different side of the same coine.

P.S.: The contemporary potholes are not those that stopped Hitler's tanks. I would drove over them with pleasure if this was true. But these are the potholes of a corrupt system and stop the local economy. A local engineer once explained to me that just 20 percent of the calculated money goes to a company that renews a road. 80 percent disapear to those who distribute the money. Going into Czernowitz you will see the villas those guys did build. The roads are therefore so poor that they melt with the snow.
