Hi Catherine! The place was Czernowitz for much longer than Cernauti....Austria marched in in 1774 and the uninvited Romanians came in 1919. And I can only speak for my family...but we were Czernowitzers for quite a few generations!! Cornel

Catherine,
The place was officially called Czernowitz for a longer time.
It was the name of our city in our languages :Yiddish and German.
This is why we called all streets in German till we left in 1946.
And so we will till the end of days.
Hardy
