Thank you very much for your kind appreciation and, YES, it's actually Paul Celan's voice, audiotaped by the Günther Neske Publishing House in the year 1958. As far as we know, that's the only one existing audiotaped recitation (2:56) of "Todesfuge" by the author himself.

In 1970 Paul Celan stated:

"This poem has now to remain completely on its own for a long, long period of time. I myself, don't read it in public any more. [Dieses Gedicht muß jetzt lange, lange noch ganz bei sich bleiben. Ich selbst lese es auch nicht mehr öffentlich.]"

If you listen to the recitation very carefully, you will discover that Paul Celan misspeaked a line, he read

"Er ruft stecht tiefer ins Erdreich ihr einen ihr andern spielt weiter zum Tanz auf"

instead of

"Er ruft stecht tiefer ins Erdreich ihr einen ihr andern singet und spielt"

but that the author's prerogative!
